The blurb: Malu Fernandez is this society journalist who writes for People Asia and the Manila Standard Today. Last year, she got into some trouble with her inappropriate comment about overseas filipino workers in a People Asia article named "From Boracay to Greece". She defended herself by saying it was meant to be a "tongue in cheek" kind of humour. People blogged and talked about her endlessly for sometime calling for her resignation from People Asia and the Manila Standard Today. Some even went as far as to call for a boycott on the publications she writes in.

The context: Lately, there's been some scandal in Manila about a few very visible socialites who call themselves or who people call "the Gucci Gang". There's a blog that's been recently put up by someone who was terribly wronged by a few notables within the circle. According to the blogger, he will write about the gang's dirty laundry until he gets back what he lost. Whether what he exposes about the people in that blog is true or not is irrelevant. The blog spread like wildfire. People who have equal dislike for that circle commented and wrote what the extra that they knew and personalities that had nothing to do with the original agenda got dragged in.

Malu Fernandez was not one of those personalities that got dragged in. But someone did refer her to read the blog. So the other day (March 10) she came out with an article called "The problem with blogging..." Read article here

My reaction: I think she's still bitter about the People Asia thing. I also think she should start running. Besides from the angry netizens that she's sure to encounter due to faulty arguments and judgemental statements, saying that backstabbing may be ingrained in the Filipino culture can't bode well for her.

But then again, if people did boycott her, then nobody would've read the article. So, what's the sound of one hand clapping?

... NBC picks up Quarterlife!

If you don't know what quarterlife is, its a web series about a bunch of 20-somethings friends trying to deal with the world. The main character chronicles their lives in a series of vlogs earning the ire and amusement of the people around her.

Quarterlife started last year before the Writers strike and not a response to, as some people might believe. I've read before that the series has been pitched to a few networks but the networks didn't exactly warm up to the idea of the 'social revolution'. So the creators, placed it online via myspace and it was a hit.

Obviously.

Although, I never quite understood how the networks could have rejected it/ placed it on hold. Quarterlife is the brainchild of the same people who made the almost cult-ish 90's teen drama My So- Called Life which, in my opinion, placed Claire Danes and Jared Leto on the map. Doesn't the concept of someone dishing the absolute truth about their friends to the public in their blog just want to make you play stalker and watch? You know you're in denial if you say "No. I don't want to watch." because there's a reason why even the most reclusive people have a social networking account-- i.e. myspace, multiply, friendster, facebook, livejournal, blogger etc. Needless to say, I've been watching it since the first webisode.

Oh! and the music they put on the show is actually really good.  There was this blurb somewhere a few months ago that they were picking artists off myspace for the show's music.
NBC's going to have a spike in their ratings for sure-- esp since there's pratically nothing on American TV on a tuesday night besides from House.

One of the few people that made me stop and go "Wow, what a nice guy." while in university when I heard how much he donated-- $20 million at one go.  Here's the write up that Sauder school sent.
--

It is with deep sadness and a great sense of loss that we learned today of the death of Dr. William L. Sauder, an honoured alumnus (LL.D.’90, B.Com.‘48), former UBC Board of Governors Chair and Chancellor, the chief benefactor of the Sauder School of Business, and a dear personal friend. Bill Sauder passed away in hospital on Wednesday, December 19 after a brief illness. He will be deeply missed.

Dr. Sauder was an honourable and generous individual whose immense contributions of time, talent, and treasure to this university have had a profound impact on higher education in B.C., benefiting students in our province for generations to come.

Dr. Sauder graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. After launching his career, he returned to UBC as a member of the Board of Governors, and was appointed Chair of the Board. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from UBC in 1990 and served as Chancellor of the university from 1996 to 2002.

Bill Sauder believed deeply in the importance of creating opportunities for young people to receive the education and tools they need to shape their futures. In 2003, he endowed the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration with the largest single private donation ever made to a Canadian business school with a gift of $20 million. In response to his contribution, the provincial government announced an ongoing commitment of $1 million per year in increased funding to support the creation of 125 new student spaces at the school. In recognition of his gift, the Faculty was named the Sauder School of Business. From 2003 onward, he continued to be involved in the growth of the business school and served on its faculty advisory board.

Bill Sauder was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of International Forest Products Ltd. (Interfor) and Sauder Industries Ltd. He was one of the founders of the forest industry in British Columbia and played a lead role in the growth of secondary manufacturing. His entrepreneurial drive and innovative business ideas contributed greatly to the economic development of the province. Bill also served on the Board of Directors of the Toronto Dominion Bank and the British Columbia Development Corporation, and on the executive committee of the Board of Directors of B.C. Hydro. He was widely recognized for his commitment to leading with honesty and integrity and provided an example for other business leaders.

In addition to his endowment gift to the Sauder School, Dr. Sauder and his wife Marjorie-Anne endowed a number of research chairs at the university, but much of their generous philanthropy to the university, to medical science, and to the community at large was made anonymously in keeping with their modest and unassuming view of service.

We extend our deepest condolences to Marjorie-Anne, and to the entire Sauder family. We share with them a very personal sense of loss.

Professor Stephen  J. Toope, President and Vice Chancellor, The University of British Columbia

Professor Daniel F. Muzyka, Dean, Sauder School of Business

I wonder if he's haunting Angus right this minute whispering the answers to the exams to some poor student who's forgotten everything.
